This is a film adaptation of the 1974 book of the same name written by Bob Woodward (played by Redford in the movie) and Carl Bernstein (Hoffman's role), who investigated the Watergate scandal for the Washington Post. The movie only depicts seven months of the timeline, starting with the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters, and ending with Richard Nixon's inauguration in 1973. The movie is also noted for its attention to detail and accuracy, down to duplicating the Post newsroom as close as possible, complete with actual boxes of trash from the actual newsroom being used in the set built on two soundstages.
