The Man With One Red Shoe

The Man With One Red Shoe. 1985 20th Century Fox.
Starring: Tom Hanks, Dabney Coleman, Lori Singer, Charles Durning, Carrie Fisher, Jim Belushi, Edward Herrmann
Director: Stan Dragoti
Available at Amazon.

This is an American remake of the 1972 French film The Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe, which did not star anyone listed above. It did feature music performed by Gheorghe Zamfir, who you may remember from 1980s commercials peddling his music as the master of the pan flute.

I digress...

There's some interesting things going down at the CIA, as Cooper (Coleman) wants to take over the position of director, but Ross (Durning) is standing in his way, so Cooper plans to either drive him to resignation, or have him removed. Ross finds out about Cooper's ambitions, and decides to return the favor, leaking a rumor that someone will be arriving at the airport that will clear him of Cooper's scheme, sending two agents to pick him up.

A desperate Cooper sends his own agent to partner with Ross's lackey Brown (Herrmann) to go to the airport to find the person. Brown was instructed to pick someone at random from the crowd, leading Cooper and his men on a wild goose chase. He selects concert violinist Richard Drew (Hanks), who was the victim of a trick by a friend named Morris (Belushi) who hid one of each pairs of his shoes, so he's wearing one business shoe and one red sneaker. After Brown backs off, Cooper takes the bait, and starts tracking Richard. Desperate to prove something, they suspect that his sheet music has secret information in it. Later, they send Maddy (Singer) to get to know him better in attempt to dig up anything valuable, but Richard falls in love.

Meanwhile, Ross sits back and watches Cooper fail miserably in his quest, while Richard is completely oblivious to the plot seemingly surrounding him ever since he got off the plane. He settles down with Maddy after Cooper is removed from the CIA.

Recommended movie.
