Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip

Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip. 1982 Rastar Productions & Columbia Pictures.
Written by and starring Richard Pryor
Director: Joe Layton
Part of the Richard Pryor: Stand-Up Comedy Double Feature with Richard Pryor: Here and Now.

Back on stage for the first time since his freebasing accident which nearly burned him to death, Richard Pryor is visably nervous at first. So, he launches right into a bit about sexual intercourse, peppered liberally with the F-bomb. It takes some time, but Pryor regains his confidence and his old form, which includes a hilarious bit about filming Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder at an Arizona prison, and meeting real life murderers.

Two of the film's centerpieces are Pryor discussing his trip to Africa, and how it prompted him to decide to stop using a certain racial slur in his comedy from then on, as well as a take no prisoners, straightforward depiction of his drug addiction, holing up in a room with a crack pipe for three weeks, blowing off an intervention by his friend Jim Brown, and the accident, which led him to quit drugs.

Very good stand-up comedy movie right here. Recommended, and not just for Pryor's bitchin' red suit.
